Substack Notes and Twitter: A Rivalry or a Match Made in Heaven?
In recent news, there has been talk of a rivalry between the new Substack Notes and Twitter, with some even describing it as a “war” between the two platforms. But is this really the case? On the surface, both platforms have different purposes and I don’t know if I would go so far. However, upon closer inspection, it’s unclear if Substack can be a threat to Twitter.

Substack Notes is a recent feature within the Substack blogging platform that allows writers to create short-form content that can be easily shared and read. It is designed to connect writers with their audience on a more personal level and provide them with a space to share updates, thoughts, or ideas that may not necessarily fit within the format of a longer newsletter or article.
In contrast, Twitter is a social media platform that allows users to share short-form updates, links, and thoughts with their followers. Twitter is more focused on real-time conversations and breaking news, and allows for quick interactions and engagement between users.
While both platforms offer short-form content sharing, they serve different purposes and audiences. Some writers may choose to use both platforms to connect with their audience in different ways, while others may prefer to focus on one platform over the other depending on their goals and target audience.
Despite the differences between the two platforms, there has been some concern over Twitter’s future, particularly in light of Elon Musk’s recent missteps. The CEO’s tweets have caused controversy and even led to Twitter being accused of blocking Substack links on its network.
.@elonmusk, you know that thing where the left eats its own? We mustn’t let that happen to the emerging western-values/free-speech coalition. Many of us who have backed your Twitter play and taken substantial heat for it are thrown by this move. The public square isn’t a monopoly https://t.co/qe1Gn6P6H6

1. Substack links were never blocked. Matt’s statement is false.

2. Substack was trying to download a massive portion of the Twitter database to bootstrap their Twitter clone, so their IP address is obviously untrusted.
3. Turns out Matt is/was an employee of Substack.
While this has caused some consternation among Twitter users, it is unclear whether it will lead to a mass exodus from the platform.
Substack, on the other hand, has been steadily gaining popularity since its inception in 2017. It was originally designed to provide writers with a platform to promote their publications and connect with their audience directly.
With the launch of the Notes feature, it seems like Substack is calling Twitter users to migrate and offering an ad-free space with a different algorithm. Here are some statements from Substack that reinforce this idea:
“Notes may look like familiar social media feeds, the key difference is in what you don’t see.”
Despite this, it remains to be seen whether Substack Notes will be able to displace Twitter as the go-to platform for short-form content sharing.
In conclusion, I think that writers and users will continue to use both platforms for different reasons, and it is unlikely that Twitter will be displaced anytime soon. Saying that, we know that social media changes all the time and Musk it’s not helping. But it seems like the competition between the two platforms will only continue to heat up in the years to come. Well, we will see.
